Verdict on Betis Performance
As a unit the defence performed well. Jose Reina made a number of important saves although his distribution was poor at times. Carra gave his usual solid performance with one mistake that resulted in a booking and a large bruise no doubt for Dani. Sami Hyypia used his aerial ability to great effect to deal with a barrage of second half corners. Djimi Traore made a couple of crucial interventions, one of which denied a probable goal, but had a bit of trouble dealing with Joaquin at times in the second half. This can be excused though a Joaquin is a very tricky customer. Josemi was mainly solid but still gave away a number of needless free kicks in dangerous areas. This will certainly cost us against better exponents of deadball situations.
The Midfield
In the first half the midfield were outstanding but they had more defensive work to do in the second half perhaps dropping a bit deeper than they should have done. Zenden gave his best performance so far in a Liverpool shirt. He looked solid, joined up well with the attack and set up the Garcia goal. Momo Sissoko showed what a valuable asset he already is. He covered every blade of grass, broke up numerous attacks and was tidy in possession. Xabi Alonso controlled the midfield at times and made some important interceptions. He didn't give his usual display of superb passing but was an effective performer nonetheless.
The Attack
Peter Crouch was superb showing exactly why Rafa was right to sign him. He held up the ball well allowing the midfield to join the attacks and played a major part in the second goal playing a disguised pass through to Bolo Zenden. Luis Garcia scored another goal in the Champions League with a beautifully timed finish. He also demonstrated some magical skills where the ball appeared to be glued to his feet. Sinama Pongolle interchanged with Luis Garcia as the second striker and right midfielder. He produced a reminder of his talent with a wonderfully executed lob. The control beforehand wasn't bad either. He also tracked back well and went on a couple of dangerous runs linking up well with Peter Crouch.
Overall it was a great start to the defence of our trophy. We again showed our defensive steel in the second half and our new attacking tactics aided by Peter Crouch in the first half.

agree with most BUT i thought zenden let their guy go from his tracking back for the goal when Sami slipped. josemi was 2 extremes very good in the tackle sometimes BUT gave away too many needless freekicks when he just needed to hustle his marker.
crouch was excellent first half and MoMo is definitely going to be a big star. Roll on united at the weekend!!
