Sven Excuses Gerrard for Below Par Performance

Gerrard was not at his best on Saturday but still gave a reasonable performance. It seems to me these days if Gerrard is not absolutely brilliant he gets criticised. Fortunately Sven was able to point out he was just back from injury:

You must remember that Steven Gerrard has trained only twice in the last 12 days," said Eriksson . "I think he was tired in the second half and maybe should have gone off earlier. We needed more energy in that area and when you get tired it's difficult to keep the ball. That's why it was coming back all the time towards the end of the match."

Gerrard offered another reason. He has been affected by being played in an abundance of varying roles for England:

"I think I was asked to play in three different positions in total," he said. "Usually it takes time to get used to the one position."
