Who shall we buy for £15m?
Reports this morning are suggesting that Rafa will be handed £ 15 million in January to strengthen the squad. We are certainly short in a few areas and Rafa has repeatedly pinpointed the right wing and central defence as two problem positions. I believe there are only a few players with the required qualities who are capable of filling these positions.
For the right of midfield we require someone with pace and skill who can cross the ball and is also happy to comply with Rafa’s disciplined defensive requirements. Simao is a definite target and Joaquin has stated he will be happy to fill the void on our right wing. In terms of their attacking ability they possess the required attributes. Hopefully they are also characters who are happy to take onboard instructions from their managers even if it curtails their natural game at times. Joaquin would be the number one choice. He showed how easily he can go past players in our recent Champions League game. The only problem would be his price tag. Rafa would need to spend his entire budget on one player and this may not even be enough to persuade Betis to sell.
There are not many obvious options available to solve our defensive problems. We have already been priced out of moves for Milito and Upson. A player I would like to see is Jorge Andrade. The Portuguese stopper has the required attributes for the Premiership and is also good on the ball. A stumbling block for the move could be the price. He is likely to cost in excess of £ 10 million. Otherwise we can hope that Rafa uses his vast knowledge and new scouting system to find someone who is unknown to us but will prove to be a good signing.
Please post your comments on who you think we can realistically buy in the transfer window.

this transfer speculation just gets more and more tiresome...
15 million is not enough to get two quality players for the positions mentioned we also could do with a centre forward if we are getting rid of Cisse & possibly Gonzalez or another person for the left
Why dont the anfield board get their arses in gear and get some investment before chelsea leave us and the others behind. Its obvious its there so sort it out! - we spent £3m on players if you subtract what we received from players sold and thats not good enough for european champions!
£15million isn't enough for both positions, but I would imagine this is on top of the £11million we have left over from the summer. If this is the case, £26million is plenty of money.
There is also the potential revenue the sale of Cisse would bring.
At the moment the potential revenue the sale of Cisse would bring is not going to be anything like what we paid for him - and until he starts scoring it will be getting smaller and smaller!
I would very much doubt that the £11 million referred to above will materialise on top of the £15 million - unless it is a clever ploy to let people know we won't be forking out silly money for average players.
This whole money issue is really starting to worry me. It's a well known fact that we generated enormous revenue from our CL run - but the club have shot themselves in the foot by being too tight to fork out for quality when they have the chance (I'm thinking most about us failing to sign Duff.
I really appreciate what the Moores family have done for LFC throughout the last decades - but if they aren't prepared to put their hands in their pockets then its time to give Steve Morgan a go.I am sick of seeing Mr Moores wringing his hands at the AGM and hinting that he's ready to sell - and then turnuing down hard cash on the table because it's coming from someone he doesn't like. That dog-in-the-manger attitude is letting personal animosity harm the club - and it won't do.
Interesting post timbo. If we qualify for the champions league 2nd stage there should be even more money available. And the World Club Championship in Japan will provide a boost to the coffers as well. I think Cisse may well be off before he has even had a proper chance to prove himself.
I agree, withwolves - it looks like Rafa has lost faith in him, and one thing about Rafa is that he can be pretty tough if he thinks players aren't making the grade or their attitude is wrong - look at what happened to Michael Owen, Baros, Pellegrino etc. I think he would have been happy enough if Gerrard had gone as well. Personally I hope Cisse gets a chance - his potential is vast, and he could be as good as Henry in a few years. His confidence is shot at the moment, though. The problem with Cisse is ego-related, I think - and he could just as easily be the next Anelka, and I don't mean that in a good way.
moores out!! - champ league victory hides the fact that were going nowhere without any real cash injection.
What happened to the £6.5m we got for Baros? I suppose this is part of the £15m. It is about time the Club indicated how the mythical new ground is affecting our transfer plans. Fans need this persective to avoid wild demands for massive spending.
I can understand the frustration of the so many fans at the lack of signing 2 'big names' on the last day of the season to fill the 2 positions he clearly recognised we need cover for. What i would say though is that the board certainly dont shirk from paying big money for players, they have supported every manager with a lot of cash. (Collymore was then a record at 8.5 million for evans, 11 million for heskey, 10 million for diouf, 10 million for alonso and lets not forget the 12 million spent in one day on 2 goalies by Ged).
They did fund a lot of transfers over the summer and we nearly captured simao for 7 million only for benfica to apparently double their fee.Why should we pay the over inflated price for players, we aint chelsea and we wont be held to ransom by clubs wanting our hard earned cash.
By holding our own over players fees clubs know that if they want to cash in on one of their stars we wont pay stupid money. Sissoko proves you dont need to spend 25 million on a midfielder (essien, like you needed to ask) to assure quality.
Cisse is a good strong team player,
After all the talk about him leaving before the supercup, he then comes on with 10 min's to spare and turns the game around.
scores two goals and lays up Garcia with the perfect cross.
you cant score goals if your not starting, and with Cisse being used as a sub when he is quite clearly lfc's best striker he has no chance of changing Rafa's mind about him.
Why cant we give some of the youngsters a chance, the only way they will get experience is if they play at the higher level's.
then there will be no need to spend all that cash for over rated players, ie Crouch, he is good for one thing, A TARGET MAN TO PLAY THE BALL TO A MAIN STRIKER, WHO IS FAST AND WHO WILL FRIGHTEN DEFENDERS, any names come to mind?
If the transfer kitty really is £26m there is plenty of funds to get one decent defender, because Hyypia is looking a little slow and a little streached, we could do with the back up.
Steve warnok looks as if he has been playing with the first team for years, why cant we bring in some youth players with the same attitude, to solve the right side and central defence? At time's it is as if we go one step forward and three steps back, We need team leaders in all parts of the field not just the midfield..
PS: Sissoko is looking like a liverpool great already.
what 15m?we had 17m left from the summer transfer budget and now benitez has 2m lower!!!!! it is suppose to have more money!!!!!!!is it a joke????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think we could buy IVAN HELGUERA as a center back and we could buy JOE COLE as a right winger.
Ha! Joe Cole? Please. Why would we want an overrated Chelsea reject? Whatever happened to Richie Partridge? We could always tempt Mr Beckham away . . . . now that WOULD be amusing!
Why don't we just spend the money on Pies and Pints for the fans instead and use the youth team?
