Is our squad really better than last year?

Rafa made this declaration yesterday:
"In my opinion we have a better team and a better squad. We still have some problems in some areas but we have to manage the situation until January."

Since the end of last season we have sold and purchased four players. We have also released five players and let three players who were part of last season's squad go out on loan. Considering the personnel that we have lost I believe the squad does not have as much depth as last season. For example, Antony Le Tallec, Ritchie Partridge, El Hadji Diouf & Vladimir Smicer could all have played on the right of midfield and now we have no options there at all. Pellegrino's contract was not renewed and now we have no cover for central defence.

We have certainly added some quality to the first team. Reina is a confident and commanding keeper and Sissoko can take over the Hamann role and offer more mobility. Peter Crouch will give us many more options upfront and is more of a team player than Milan Baros. However it remains to be seen what the purchase of Zenden has added to squad with the imminent return of Harry Kewell and the emergence of Steve Warnock on the left.

I feel our first team has improved slightly but the squad is lacking cover in some important areas. Rafa has already given Barragan a debut and perhaps he is relying on some of our young recruits to feature sooner rather than later to improve the depth of the squad.

Please make you views known.

I agree. The loss of Biscan could also prove costly if Gerrard is injurred/suspended. Igor deputised fantastically last year in that position in some very important CL games.

the loss of biscan? are you fucking serious? we have Sissoko who in the five games I have seen him play looks ten times a better player than Biscan.

I also agree about the with wolves thing.

Keep LFC Scouse

I think we have more numbers alright when discussing first team players but unfortunately they are only that, numbers. In the league Cisse, Nando and Zenden are just that, making up the numbers. If they aren't contributing then how are they aiding ? We have some good players alright but unfortunatley once we hit the final third it's medicority. Remains to be seen if Crouch can improve on that department but highly unimpressed with Bolo so far. Defending well but yes, a worry we have no cover.

i am confused if we have a stronger side than last year or not beacause altough we made good signings some players have gone away like BAROS,SMICER,KIRKLAND and BISCAN

To have a stronger side we need to sighn a defeender like GALLAS a winger like JOE CCOLE and a striker like ANELKA

"To have a stronger side we need to sighn a defeender like GALLAS a winger like JOE CCOLE and a striker like ANELKA"

gallas is good but the other 2, seriously? Joe cole is so shit, over rated and he thinks he is the worlds best player. Anelka is the moody-est, non-team player in the history of the premier league, he seems to use every club as a stepping stone to another. whilst his goal scoring record is impressive, he would be a constant worry about whichplayer would turn up. the 'no one can stop me' player or the 'i would rather be watching neighbours' player.

If you look player for player we have improved
Zenden - Smicer, zenden might not be a skillful but he is stronger and works harder.
Sissoko - Biscan, biscan was great in the CL but was woeful in the PL. Sissoko is already showing he can be world class.
Crouch - Baros, while most fans will instantly dismiss this as 'baros is better' lets look at the facts. Since xmas (when crouch finally got a game as beattie 'the undroppable' went to the BS) crouch scored 16 in 20 PL games baros scored 3 in all comps. and he was first choice for all of that. Whilst baros has skill he was not a team player, and the option of pace we already had with cisse and pongolle. So whilst crouch is not the most glamorous of signings he offers something we badly needed, a player who can hold the ball up and is good in the air.

No doubt when January comes benitez will have his CB and Winger problems sorted without being ripped off by clubs knowing our cash situation and need for more cover.

I agree Kris, anyway I think we have no chance of getting Gallas now he is the first choice central defender again at Chelsea & Carvalho had his tantrum. I'm hoping Zenden will show us why he was Boro player of the year last season. However he played centrally last year and I don't think he is as mobile as he used to be. He appears to be carrying lots of weight.
As for Peter Crouch, all we can do is wait and see.

Lets be honest lads, the squad this term is a big improvement on last years. We've got more options now, and I think the likes of Sissoko and Zenden can only get better. I was a bit pissed off we didn't sign a winger but I for one trust Rafa, he was right not to sign any one just for the sake of it, it has to be the right type of player.

At the end of May we knew we needed a Pacy CB and a direct RW better than Nunez.Where are they????

Our squad is better because we GOT RID of the dead wood. There were a LOT of players who did not perform to expectations and were off loaded.( except Henchoz for me )

Rafa will off load even his own signing ( Nunez, Pelle ) if he is not injured ( josemi take note ) and not performing.

The player that left were given the chance to perform and they just could not cut it.

Mr Benny brought in players who has the heart to plat for LFC. And is building a younger squad for the future.

As for RM problems, if TLT, Richie, Diouf or Smicer can play there then bloody hell.. so can Ponggo, Zenden, Potter, Kewell, Cisse and Stevie G.

Whitbread would be just as good as Pelle for cover... with more potential.

What ever player we are getting or have approached, we should NEVER pay more than what is reasonable. Let's build our own team , focus on our young guns and play the liverpool way... not buy like chelsea at every given chance.

if cash is a problem, we should get a CB first! a world class one.

either a proven old guard which will still be able to run for a couple of years or a couple of young ones with the potiential of sissoko.

for the RM, gerrard should be played there. he may not be considered most effective there, but the CM is already packed with enough cover.
