Warnock keeping his feet firmly on the ground
Following his England call up Steve Warnock is now focusing on battling for his place in the Liverpool side. He faces competition from Djimi Traore & John Arne Riise. However if he carries on the way he has started this season the left back spot should soon be his own. He had this to say about his first full England call up:
"I'm not going to get carried away just because I've been called into the England squad," said Warnock.
"This first thing I've got to do is make sure I'm playing regularly for Liverpool, otherwise I won't even be considered for England again.
"I've really enjoyed my experience, but I'm looking at it as a bonus. My main aim is to get established in the Liverpool team. If I do that, the England scouts will be watching.
"When I joined up with the England squad, it was like the first day of school for me. I was thinking to myself 'don't do anything wrong'.
"It's been made easier because Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are here, while Chris Kirkland and Michael Owen have made sure I knew what I was doing around the place as well.
"Sven Goran Eriksson congratulated me on my call-up and told me I deserved it.
"You learn to get used to it quite quickly. It's different to being at your club, obviously. Training is different, with more eleven-a-side games than you'd have at Liverpool.
"It's always a bit strange when you know the best you can hope for is a place on the bench. I was hoping I might make it there against Wales, but it wasn't to be."
I am sure he will get more chances in the future for England.
