Rafa remains defiant after setback

Rafa has urged our players to remain proud and confident following our heavy defeat yesterday. He feels we are three points behind where we should be at present:
"I could see at the final whistle a lot of the players' heads were down because they were disappointed, but I said to them they should keep their head up," said Benitez."It's going to be difficult for them going on an international break now, but they should remember the reaction of the supporters after the game. At most grounds, the fans would leave when their side is losing 4-1."You do not see this at Liverpool. Our fans stayed to sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. That meant a lot to me, the club and players because it showed they knew the score did not reflect the game."I'm disappointed for everyone by the result, but we must stay positive. For the first 25 minutes we played well. Until the penalty we were the better of the teams."We must remember this is the first league game we've lost this season and we were beaten by a good team. We made mistakes which cost us, but we will learn from them."I think it's important that I support the play-ers rather than criticise their mistakes."Liverpool's fixture list over the next few months doesn't appear as tough as its been over the first few weeks of the season, and Benitez will be hoping his side makes progress when the international break is over."When you look at the teams near the top of the table, I know we can do well when we play these clubs," said Benitez. "At this moment, we are probably one win short of where we should be after the games we've played, but this can change."
I think Rafa is right in backing the players after their performance yesterday. The effort was certainly there and it was individual errors that proved to be costly.

suggested formations:-

more offensive version of current game:

--garcia crouch cisse

--alonso gerrard sissoko

riise carra hyypia finnan

----------reina

realistic formation considering the squad we have:

------crouch cisse

---------garcia

------alonso gerrard

---------sissoko

riise carra hyypia finnan

-----------reina

if in doubt, play 442:

-------crouch cisse

garcia alonso sissoko gerrard

riise--carra hyypia---finnan

-----------reina

if we insist on 4231 cisse MUST be given a run in the out and out position. currently we are playing 460 with our ONLY goal threat on the right or on the bench:

---------cisse

--garcia crouch gerrard

------alonso sissoko

riise carra hyypia finnan

----------reina

*gerrard should fill in at right wing. we have enough quality in the centre.

*crouch is an attacking midfielder/centre forward. somebody needs to score goals.

*in the transfer market we need to attain a left winger, a right winger and a left back. cover for central defence and possibly even a striker. the board have to come up with the cash or sell the club.

A lot of sensible suggestions - I just cannot understand what is going on with Cisse and Benitez?!!! It may be stating the obvious but surely Crouch and Cisse have to be given a run of games together? It just doesn't make sense to keep giving Cisse 10 minutes at the end of a game when there is so little chance of making a real impression - please Benitez, listen to the fans on this one!

giving cisse and crouch a chance to complement each other is hardly a crazy suggestion.

i can't imagine anybody would need this spelling out to them. it may not work, but on paper it seems like a decent idea. especially when you remember that the transfer market doesn't open for a few months - and if we want joaquin/simao whoever to want to come here, we're gonna have to not look too desperate.

also: in the premiership you have to have genius forwards in order to make 4231 work. even in spain where you get more space, you need the likes of ronaldinho to make it really come off.

english football is traditionally 442. if a team is in trouble over here, reverting to and picking your best 442 XI has to be the quickest way to find your form again. it's a cultural thing. all the players will know how to play 442 i would have though.

i love you rafa, but please, cut your losses on the flamboyant spanish style. you can't play that way in the premiership until you have afforded yourself some genius players.

even then it may not work.

traore was rubbish on in the left back position. but he actually, and so did finnan, put in the better crosses provided by the team over the 2 matches.

why not give them a go on the wings with cisse and crouch upfront?

and another thing:

EVERY TEAM IN THE PREMIERSHIP SHOULD PLAY FOR A 0-0 DRAW AGAINST CHELSEA. THAT IS ALL THEY PLAY FOR, UNLESS YOU MAKE A MISTAKE, THEN THEY LET DROGBA HAVE A GO AT DOING SOMETHING.

IF THEY DRAW MOST OF THEIR GAMES, WHICH IS POSSIBLE IF EVERYBODY PUTS ALL MEN BEHIND THE BALL, THEY WILL NOT WIN THE LEAGUE AND HAVE TO CHANGE THEIR TACTICS - THEY WILL HAVE TO PLAY FOOTBALL.

IF YOU'VE SPENT THAT MUCH ON PLAYERS IT IS AN INSULT TO THE REST OF US THAT YOU SIT AND DEFEND ALL GAME WAITING FOR A HOLE TO APPEAR.
