No Defence for lack of Signings

Unfortunately no defensive additions of proven quality were made during the summer. This is going to leave Carra and Sami with the arduous task of playing every game until January provided they avoid any injuries. If either is unable to play we will be sadly lacking cover.
Josemi has played there in pre-season and in a couple of Champions League qualifiers but at present he is not the most confidence inspiring member of our squad. He loves a tackle so much that he is prone to dive in even when there is little chance of winning the ball. This is the last thing we need in central defence and doesn’t conform to the Hansen preferred method of staying on your feet. Josemi also lacks the height to win the ball in air if deputising for Hyypia. We don’t want to return to the days of the late 90’s when every corner caused our vertically challenged defence problems.
Personally I think Djimi Traore should now be given the chance to prove his worth as a centre back. All he has to learn is the ideal time to clear the ball. He has the pace that we are crying out for at the back and is fairly competent in the air. His distribution needs to improve but his improved confidence has led to better composure on the ball. I think Djimi will find it hard to be selected at left back with the recent emergence of Steve Warnock. The acquisition of Zenden is likely to push Riise into a more defensive role to put Djimi further down the pecking order.
The other options are youngsters. Although it’s best not to play them in central defence as this position is suited to experienced and fully physically developed players.
I find it astounding that we were unable to purchase a new central defender in the summer. This position is the most important in the team in terms of a foundation to give everyone confidence to attack. If Sami or Carra are injured or suspended it will inevitably have a negative impact on our season.

Please make your thoughts known.

I agree that Djimi deserves a chance but I think you underestimate Josemi's ability at centre half. He is strong and loves to compete. His positional play is a lot better than Djimi's ,although that's not saying much. Also, his heading is far superior to Djimi's who has the proverbial sheriff's badge on his neck.

Unfortuantely I have yet to be convinced by Josemi. His positional sense at right back was lacking at times last season. Although he is not scared, just like Carra, to put his head in where it hurts.

I'd rather have Zak Whitbread at Center half than Traore or even worse... Josemi... if one wants pace, positioning, heading abilitlies and someone who loves a tackle... then warnock would be a better choice than josemi who is SLOW

Whitbread looks to have developed quite a lot in the summer...He looked awkward in the league cup last year but I think this year he has matured and him or Traore would do well along side one of the estabished centre backs...
Although the prospect of traore and whitbread at the back together is scary!!!

If you want a definition of SLOW you just have to look at Sami Hypia. I have been wanting him replaced with someone strong, quick and athletic for the last 3 seasons - his lack of pace and inability to really mark one-for-one due to lack of mobility makes him a liability and forces us to rely on good defensive cover in midfield ahead of him. He's been made to look silly by anyone willing to run and dribble from the likes of Kaunus and CSKA Sofia this season - it doesn't bode well!

I guess the point I'm making is that its not "cover" we need, it a new first choice centre back plus cover, to play alongside Carra. The lack of quality defensive signings, not just this summer but in the previous 2 seasons, is in my opinion one of the biggest failings of the club management and I fear will cost us dear in the Champions League and Premiership this season!
