Jol Backs Reds to Finish in the Top Three

Martin Jol has been impressed with our perfomances under Rafa. He feels we are improving all the time and this will be reflected in our final league placing:

"Liverpool have another piece of silverware now with the Super Cup and Rafa Benitez is doing well for them. The league is different and they know that, they had a difficult season last time but are getting better and better. They have made some good signings and are team who can easily finish in the top three in England."

Jol has identified Steve Gerrard & Xabi Alonso as major threats to his team tomorrow. In the 2-2 draw last season Xabi gave a masterclass of midfield play by spraying incisive passes to all areas of the pitch. As his performance was exceptional against Spurs last season it is no surprise that Jol has earmarked him as a threat.

"Looking back to the Champions League final in May, I thought it was going to be a disastrous final, maybe the worst for a team ever. "It was 3-0 and I thought it might be five or six at the end. They came back, I don't think they did anything particularly differently but they had Steven Gerrard and he is a top class player - the best midfielder in England. "He got going and they took a lot of confidence from his goal and clawed their way back. I think it was one of the best finals we have ever seen. "Another goalscorer in that game, Xabi Alonso, played against us last year and he is a playmaker and is pretty tough as well. He is a good character and, with the styles Liverpool sometimes play, it can be difficult to cope with him as he is the holding player with Gerrard going forward. He is a good player but we have a lot of good players of our own. "Gerrard, when you think back to the Middlesbrough game on the opening day of the season, he had three or four chances he made himself. It was still a draw, but he is one we have to watch.

"It is a big game for us," he says. "We were unfortunate against Chelsea and hopefully we can make up for it against Liverpool. They are a good side - we are going from playing the champions to Champions League winners in two games and it will be difficult. "If we can play with a lot of confidence, like we did against Chelsea before the sending off, we can do well. With our crowd backing us all the time we have every chance.

If the Dutchman is right about our final league placing I would be delighted:

As a spurs fan, I respect Rafa's reds too. Liverpool have the potential to be a class act. The game wil definitely be the highlight of my weekend.
You have brilliance in midfield, determination and experience at the back and If tottenham are to win, we must break up your passing, and feed our strikers the right kind of service.
I think we have the quality to maybe do that. Rasiak is an unknown for us and Ledley is maybe not match sharp, but we are a far cry from spurs two years ago.
May the best team win.

Well I'm a Spurs fan for starters but I can't quite see you finishing above chelski, manure or arse*** though I'd like you to. I reckon 4th looks about right with us in 5th though to be honest (a bad habit) I think Jol needs a while to suss out who works best where and with whom. 6th or 7th is maybe more realistic.

Good luck this season (apart from saturday)

another spurs fan here.
i think we can win it if we stop alonso spraying balls all over the place, hopefully Davids will not give him any time on the ball,Gerrard isn't buzzing as he can just yet and hopefully he wont against us, rafas done a great job there i just think he lacks a few English players in his squad to break up the big 3, but good luck to all, may the best team win

Oh by the way my prediction for the game (for what it's worth):

Score draw.

I think Rafa is likely to play three in midfield and one up front. This will make the game a tighter affair than the encounter at Anfield last season. However an early goal goes in it could be a classic.

I THINK THA SPURS ARE BETTER MAN FOR MAN ALL OVER THE PITCH, WITH THE OBVIOUS EXCEPTION OF GERRARD. THINK OUR DEFENCE WILL BE TO STRONG WITH DAVIDS AND CARRICK IN FRONT OF THEM. IF THE APPALING CROUCH DOES START IT WILL ONLY HIGHLIGHT THE FACT THAT THEY MISSED OUT ON OWEN

Sissoko better than anthing we've got? The ashes is on now mate- maybe u should watch it bcoz u clearly know nothing about footy do ya.

By the way Kings better than Carragher as well.

Defoe and Robbo would walk into your team. How many players can we say that about apart from Stevie G?

I am very confident about this for spurs. Think it might take gerrard a couple games to regain form and alonso wont get the space. Cisse only just passed fit and crouch back from longish lay off. Surs to boss this one 2-0 or 3-1.

I am a RED... but I have to say Momo is not one of our better players... potentially yes.. but not yet... in short... predicition... tough match... Reds 2 Spurs 0
