Parry pensive after transfer troubles
After missing out on a whole host of targets our Chief Exec, Rick Parry, has remained positive on what can be achieved this season:
"We don't believe it should be all doom and gloom. There isn't a club which hasn't suffered disappointments in the transfer market, so we're no different," said Parry. "The big danger, particularly when you're approaching the deadline, is you get desperate and do the wrong deal. You have to hold your nerve and we decided not to pursue certain targets in the end yesterday. We have a lot of faith in the players we have. "We have brought in most of the players we wanted. Let's not forget we've spent £20m to bring in Pepe Reina, Momo Sissoko, Peter Crouch and Bolo Zenden. They are four top players. "We have spent the same amount we spent in 2002 when we bought just three players, so lack of money has not been an issue here. "We've enjoyed a pretty good summer in the transfer market. There's been a substantial outlay. "If you compare last August to this, we have spent heavily on strikers, as Jamie Carragher has pointed out today. "We didn't leave things too late because the deals we wanted were completed early during the summer and at that stage we were content we'd achieved four out of four on our list of targets. That left us looking for a right midfielder and cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia at centre-half. "Yesterday was a strange day. We had an agreement with Benfica but when the story leaked there was such a strong reaction they felt they couldn't sell. Simao was sitting on a plane waiting to come for his medical, but Benfica called it off. In a way, it was similar to the Steven Gerrard situation here when Chelsea were interested. "It was disappointing but there is nothing we could do. Had the deal broken down on June 30, perhaps there wouldn't be such doom and gloom because you know there's time to find someone else. That's not the case on deadline day. "Rafa is philosophical about the situation. He insisted we didn't pay for players who weren't worth the money. We could have signed centre-halves yesterday, but there was no point wasting money for the sake of it. "He is sure we are better placed to challenge for the top places this season. We want to push on from last season and we are still confident we have the players to do it. "We haven't got 100 per cent of our targets, but which top club in the world ever gets everything it wants. We've done pretty well. It was a strange contrast between European success and disappointment in the Premiership. "Have we got a better squad to do well in all competitions this season? Rafa's answer to this is yes."
If Rafa is happy we should all be happy.

problem is with no cover at the back an no width on the right a top three finish is definatley out of the equation now. Sambrosa would have been good but anything is better than Garcia/Potter hugging the right touchline?!?
Guess a few of our youth/reserves players will get a couple of matches now we didn't sign cover for CB. Lacking a RW is worrying but I am confident we will cope.
We have got in some great young players. I reckon 1 or 2 may make it into the 1st team by the end of the season as Rafa loves to give youth a chance.
New season, same old shit! Last minute panic to sign players when they should have been sorted time ago. Parry says got 4 out of 4 on the list. Why the F##k is Rafa bangin' on about needing a right sider and centre half then????? Why haven't we got a right sider and a centre half??? Spent £20 mil on 4 top players Parry also says....?!?!? Zenden, not bad but just how effective is he? Is he going to do much more than that prick Kewell?? Doubt it. Crouch...... £7 mil brilliant bit of business there. Had good game against us last season, skinned most of us, got a couple of headers but at the end of the day, he's a corner flag, blowin' in the wind. Reina and Mo look good, Mo got loadsa potential - but that is it. And we're meant to be challengin' for title. F##k off. If Moores loves the club as much as he portrays, then stop being such a tight c#n# and dip into your fat pockets. Sold the Littlewoods not too long ago, family worth a fortune, but he can't get buried with it. Enjoy your riches whilst you're alive Moores, get spending. Right sider, I'll be calling Betis. They'll give you someone to watch week in week out. Owen, if you loved him so much, buy him back. Who else is getting us 20 goals this season. It's your f#c#i#g fault he left on the cheap in any case. Pay up or f##k off Moores. And Parry, get back to school. Economics you want - scale of.......
Anyway, lets hope Rafa still in the mood for poker, cos bluff is all we got!
$ 13 million is too much for simao, but Michael Owen's ego cost us all these, imagine that the club would have to pay atleast an extra 10 million for owen, RW, CB, had madrid accepted our bid, sure made Parry's head spinning, and rafa just can't say no to "owen".
some knobjockey has blamed parry for letting owen move too cheaply but knobjockey dont you realise owen had us over a barrel, one year left on his contract, another mcmanaman situation was looming so they had to do the right thing for the club and sell him for what they could get. If you want to blame someone then blame owen hes the one who wouldnt give rafa a chance as he wanted to win trophies, kinda back fired on the midget, YNWA
Who is this idiot ^ ? I bet he was thinking the complete opposite of what he's writing now a few weeks ago. We have a couple of poor games in the league and he starts moaning. We've scored over 20 goals already and the seasons hardly started. I cant c any problems at all. Just wait till abt christmas and then u can moan if we're not doing well. Our team is a lot stronger than last year. We can seiously challenge for the title this year.
I was talking abt the guy above who uses F##K in every sentence.
I was quite downheartened about the lack of signings, shrinking squad and lack of new ground until I read Rick Parry's quote 'We have spent the same amount we spent in 2002 when we bought just three players'.And what an unrivalled success Diouf, Diao and Cheyrou were! Mr Parry, you have eased all of my concerns...
Parry said "It's never ideal trying to do business on the last day because things can go wrong and then there's no room to manoeuvre. Clearly, they waited on the owen deal before deciding which target to sign. Why?in case the $10 million bid for owen was accepted.
The whole time rafa hav been saying that RW and CB was a priority,so why wait till the last minute.
SO, WHO TO BLAME FOR OUR FAILURE TO SIGN A RW AND CB :
1.SUPER SELFISH MICHAEL OWEN.
2.PATHETIC ENGLISH MEDIA.
3.IDIOTIC FORMER PLAYERS(LEGENDS) AND MANAGERS,PUNDITS,AND STEVEN GERRARD.
FOR PUTTING ALL THE PRESSURE ON THE CLUB AND MANAGER TO RESIGN MICHAEL OWEN DESPITE OF THE PLAN MADE PRIOR TO OWEN'S ISSUE.
AND
4.RAFA BENITEZ WHO DO NOT HAVE
THE GUT TO SAY OUT LOUD THAT MICHAEL OWEN, OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT HE'S ENGLISH AND A LOCAL LAD, IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY FOR THE CHAMPION OF EUROPE.
Always looking for others to blame. Liverpool are pretty poor in the transfer market. Admit it. They buy high or buy utter shit and sell low. There's a history of it. If they thought their summer signings were complete, then why on the last day or two are we running round desperate to better the squad. Think of the players we've got rid of, either for free or on loan (cos we certainly don't like making any money out of it) and who we've replaced them with. Forget quality, just look at the numbers... can you count...? I don't think Rafa is exactly over the moon with the situation, and Parry is putting on a brave face for you queers who love been bent over barrels. A couple of sub-standard games already and whoever said we scored 20 goals already this season - Stevie G got most of them, the rest scored against chicken pluckers - it's not exactly 20 goals against a Prem defence. How shit does the team look when Stevie don't play. I'm not surprised he wanted to leave. He's a one man show and sits the pressure. Yeah we got some good players, but they don't get results, especially when El Capatan ain't playing. We might have a good season, we might be real lucky, but we'll have this same debate this time next year.
If you don't agree, I don't care. Get real or f#c# off dreamers.
Oh and I use f#c# in every sentance cos supporting Liverpool is f#c#i#g stressful.
What a great thread this is. More passion here than on the pitch when we don't have SG or JC playing... I'll add Cisse to that too. I guess we'll have to see how right Rafa is in his dealings. All I can say is that for all the duffers he signed last year we still lifted the European Cup. I've already got my bet on for this year...
btw - Anyone else reminded of the badie in Marathon Man by Rafa? And what about the notebook? "...and your name is going in the book."
Its all a bit of a rollercoaster isn't it, but the downs make the success seem even sweeter. I'd rather that than be on the boring Chelsea monorail where they can buy who ever they want whenever they want. Our success in Europe was against the odds and that made it even more the magnificent.
On the other hand, didn't Juventus buy Walter Samuel for £12m over the summer? We truly are hilariously bad at negotiating transfers
I never liked the idea of buying success rather than building it. The most important thing that I can see from mr benny is he chooses players who have to heart to play for LFC. That is the best way we have to get the best out of a player.
Owen's made decisions that he sees as best for HIS own good ( namely the WORLD cup )... he did not have the heart to come back. Half heartedly yes,... but to come back and warm the bench or say no to Newcastle and risk his chances of Real not being able to make a deal with LFC, he was not willing.
I believe we have a decent enough squad to challenge .. to challenge strongly on all fronts provided... Traore doesnt play, Diao is shipped out and Josemi remains in the reserves unless we have no other choice!!!
Our RW can make do. We may not have great players there but we can make do with Ponggo , Garcia, Potter, even Kewell Zenden or Stevie G if necessary.
hey knobjockey, i agree with a lot of your points and think the way weve been playing is cause for concern, we had a jump start on the rest of the league as we had to qualify for the champions league so youd have thought by now they should be at least nearing top form but weve been far from it, we should be knocking teams like middlesborough and sunderland over especially as they both had a man sent off but we were poor. However your still wrong about parry being to blame for us getting such a pittance for owen, if anyones to blame blame the midget himself, the club wanted him to stay but he had us over a barrell so we had to take what we could get, and I think Kewell will come good now hes hopefully over his injury woes, rafa obviously likes him and theres no doubting he has talent.
