Is Hyypia a reason for our problems?

Sadly I think the end is nigh for Sami. He has never been the quickest but he now has no pace whatsoever. For the team to defend well with Hyypia playing we need to defend deep. He is still dominant in the air and is very useful when defending set pieces and corners. He thrives when the playing style is defensive, for example in European away games. If Rafa wants to play a more attacking style then Sami does fit in those plans. As soon as we play higher up the pitch we see Sami getting caught out , he also gets drawn out to the wings and is unable to cope with one on one situations.

Sami established his reputation during the Houllier years when the team battled to win games by small margins whilst defending deep in numbers. I think Sami should remain part of our squad as his some of his attributes, notably his aerial ability, do not exist elsewhere within our squad. However I think it's time for him to be considered more of a backup player than a first teamer. The only snag is we don't have any other options at present due to our problems in the transfer market.
To become a real Premiership force and win more games we will need to find a pacy replacement sooner rather than later.

I dont agree with the fact he is totally at the end of his days with us. But i do believe that he can not play game in game out. I feel a centre back is definetly some thing we must get hold of in january to improve on our position in the league. I do still think he can defend well if given a rest from time to time.
Bring in Phillip Mexes. Also bringing in another defender will enable us to give Jamie a rest aswell from time to time. The fact we made so many silly mistakes on sunday also shows our squad have trouble playing in the prem after a tough night in europe.

Sadly enough his potencial starting to look like zero. Those who play hockeyarena.net would probably get this one.

Hypia has been a liability for a couple of seasons now. I've posted previously 3 times this season about how desperately we need to replace Hypia with someone with pace and strength who really can defend one against one and offers some hope of recovering when there's a mistake. The defensive partner Carra deserves.

Hypia was a disaster against Chelsea and there has not been a game this season where he has not been caught out of position and shown up for lack of pace on at least a couple of occasions - even against FC Kaunas and CSKA he looked pretty suspect when anyone with a bit of pace ran at him - it is the end of the road, or shoyuld be. Unfortunately, who is there to replace him with given the lack of centre back signing over the last 3 seasons??!!!!!

You look at teams like West Ham who have two geniunely quick defenders - they may not be the best but when they make a mistake they recover and their pace allows the midfield more freedom to play. No wonder we play with two holding midfield players when you are having to ensure no-one gets a run on Hypia.

And please don't tell me that the results suggest otherwise - anyone watching the games knows that Hypia has been slow and cumbersome and an accident waiting to happen for a while now!!

January can't come soon enough! Lets just hope Benitez gets the right man (men?) to sort the back out and then can free up the way the teams plays.

Get Gallas!! Gallas-Jamie will be even better than Gallas-Terry.. he can play anywhere (right,left,center).. And then he's unhappy at Stam Brdg..

He is getting old and needs to get more time to rest between games. Hyypiä was superb on wednesday against Chelsea but the second game against them came too soon (and the fact that he had been sick for 2-3 days). But the time is near for him and this could be his last season in starting-11.

I still think that Hyypiä is our second best defenseman. Traore+Warnock still need time and experience to play well night-in-night-out. Finnan can keep his level, but his level is only good enough for a substitute. And I don't even need to mention Josemi...
