The right midfield options

Unfortunately we have failed to secure a new right winger therefore someone who is currently in our squad will have to take this role. Fortunately we do have a large squad with a lot of versatile players so it shouldn't be as much of a problem as some are saying. In my opinion we have seven different possibilities.

My preferred choice would be Gerrard. There is no doubt he could do a world class job on the right as he would do anywhere on the field. He played there to great effect in the treble season. His performance against Man U when he scored a 35 yard rocket immediately springs to mind. Now we have Sissoko, who has already proved himself to be Premiership class, to partner Alonso in what would be a not too Xabi central midfield partership. This can release Gerrard to the right without weakening other areas too much.
Florent Sinama Pongolle would be my number two choice. He has plenty of trickery and pace and can deliver reasonable quality balls into the box. I think Flo will find it hard to break into the 1st team as a striker after the arrivals of Morientes and Peter Crouch.
Luis Garcia has played there before however he likes to cut in too much and lacks defensive discipline. He is best suited playing just off a striker.
Harry Kewell is another option. He is someone else who likes to cut inside but can also use his right foot if necessary. He has the skills to bamboozle the defenders sufficiently to cut back and cross using his gifted left foot aswell. Ideally when Kewell regains his fitness, he will be able to show the form that made him one of the best left sided midfielders in Europe, on our left midfield.
Djibril Cisse does not like playing there but Rafa likes him to use his astonishing pace to beat defenders and cross the ball. He put in a wonderful ball in the Supercup for Garcia but hopefully, if given a proper chance, he will establish himself up front as our top striker.

Steve Finnan & Darren Potter could also potentially be played on the right wing. I hope not though as Finnan had made the right back position his own and Potter lacks the necessary speed to beat a man.

Agreed but it think only gerrard and fsp is good enough
others lack the x-factor to be a winger
fsp is the better choice because of his pace and skills while gerrard is too valuable in the center

I think until January we will be alright, Sissoko can cover for Gerrard as long as Alonso is playing.

I think it should be Gerrard. It's not like he won't be in the team. People keep saying that we would lose his drive from the middle of the park, but we have to have someone capable and there is none other than Gerrard.

Gerrard will also give more protection to Finnan or Josemi

Don't be daft, play your best player in their best positions. Let's face facts, after not managing to secure MO's signature, we're facing a season of 1-0 wins and 0-1 defeats. Injury to central defence and Traore's back - do me a favour!

Cheer up everyone!!

who needs a right winger when we have LORD CISSE!! - he will bang in 30 odd goals this season, just you watch!!

The one area we are strongest, in my opinion, is that of central midfield. We all know that Xabi is class and I have seen enough of Momo to rate him very highly (even if he is a bit rough round the edges), therefore Gerrard wide right would be a reasonable shout! With the poor transfer activity it may be the short term solution.

I hope you're right if he gets 30 odd then we should be in the running for the title.

Cisse to get 30 goals? Even with a ratio of 1 goal every 2 games he'd need 60 games. I can't see Raffa giving him that.

Cisse scored 70 in 128 for Auxerre. More than a goal every other game.

just try JAR on the right wing ....

That hadn't even crossed my mind. JAR would score twice as many goals on the right than he gets on the left.

The French league is an inferior league to the Premiership. Besides, I suspect he had a team that was settled and played to his strengths. Auxerre were a team that could regularly get players up to support him. Our midfield would rather play around the half-way line

Of course the French league is inferior but it's not too easy to score lots of goals in that league

i think you all took my comment a bit too literally, i was only joking about the 30 goals! i was trying to instill a bit of confidence into everyone as they seem to be thinking its the end of the world because the poisoned dwarf didnt sign for us! - who cares, lfc is bigger than one player....unless seemingly that player is steven gerrard! ROCK ON!

Cisse can deliver, but needs support from the spaniards .... and i'm not talking of Morientes ... he should watch from the bench / tv ....

What are your thoughts on Potter? I see him as a good Championship player but no more. Willing, but lacking in pace and trickery. He's got a longer contract though. Am I being hard on the guy?

I agree with you brush. I was surprised to hear he was given a contract extension. He is a creative player but is not quick enough to play on the wing. Hopefully he can prove me wrong and make it as top player.
